Alabama remains near the bottom in hospital safety

Hospital safety is a very important issue. It impacts many aspects of patient health, including the likelihood of hospital patients facing harmful medical mistakes. Injuries from such errors can have many lasting ramifications for patients and can raise impactful legal issues related to compensation.

Unfortunately for patients here in Alabama, the state hasn’t been a stranger to poor rankings in hospital safety. For fall of 2017, it was ranked in the bottom 10 for such safety in a Leapfrog report. Specifically, it was ranked No. 42.

Twice a year, Leapfrog does this type of report. It looks at over 2,600 hospitals in the country. Each facility is given an A through F letter grade for overall safety, based on a review of 30 different factors. The states are then ranked based on what percentage of their hospitals were A-rated.

Did Alabama do any better in the spring 2018 version of the report? Unfortunately, it showed no improvement in its ranking, as it stayed in the No. 42 spot.

In this most recent version of report, the most common grade Alabama hospitals received was a C. Over half of the hospitals in the state that the report looked at got this grade. As a note, no hospitals in the state were given an F.

So, the report points to many hospitals in the state being middling when it comes to safety. What areas do you think hospitals in the state most need to improve in when it comes to safety? What do you think could best help spur on such improvements?

One wonders if Alabama hospitals, as a whole, will have better success moving forward in the ranks in upcoming reports, or will continue to remain near the bottom.
